Pine PAR

  • 400mm x 22mm x 22mm (x4) – Vertical sides (frame)
  • 150mm x 22mm x 22mm (x8) – Horizontal sides (frame)
  • 150mm x 40mm x 12mm (x 2) – Top inner frame
  • 126mm x 40mm x 12mm (x2) – Top inner frame

Laminated Pine or Pine PAR

  • 220mm x 220mm x 22mm (x1) – Base

Step by Step Instructions:

Step 1:

Building the top inner frame. You will use Pine PAR pieces 150mm x 40mm x 12mm (x 2) and 126mm x 40mm x 12mm (x2).

This frame will be built by putting the 2 short pieces between the long pieces and fastening the frame together with screws and wood glue.

Start by holding the 150mm x 40mm x 12mm on top of 126mm x 40mm x 12mm to form a 90-degree angle. While holding in place, drill pilot holes, then counter sink the holes before applying wood glue where the wood will connect and fasten with chipboard screws 3.0mm x 25mm. Repeat this process with the other half of the frame (150mm x 40mm x 12mm on top of 126mm x 40mm x 12mm), before connecting the two parts to form the full frame.

Step 2:

Fastening the top horizontal frame to the top inner frame. You will use Pine PAR pieces 150mm x 22mm x 22mm (x4).

Align the first piece 150mm x 22mm x 22mm to outside of one of the sides of the top inner frame. Make sure that it is perfectly aligned to the bottom of the top inner frame at the bottom and on the sides. Once in place, drill pilot holes and counter sink. Now apply wood glue before fastening it with chipboard screws 3.0mm x 25mm. Repeat this process three more times until all 4 sides of the top horizontal frame is complete.

Step 3:

Building the vertical sides of the frame. Use Pine PAR 400mm x 22mm x 22mm (x4).

Put the first piece 400mm x 22mm x 22mm in place between the two top horizontal frame pieces (150mm x 22mm x 22mm) fastened in step 2. Make sure that it is perfectly aligned with the top of the pieces already assembled in step 2. Now drill pilot holes, counter sink, glue and fasten with screws 3.0mm x 25mm. Repeat this process to fasten all 4 vertical sides.

Step 4:

Completing the frame. Use remaining Pine PAR pieces 150mm x 22mm x 22mm (x4).

To complete the horizontal parts at the bottom of the frame you will now insert the remaining pieces 150mm x 22mm x 22mm (x4) between the pieces 400mm x 22mm x 22mm assembled in step 3. Hold the first piece 150mm x 22mm x 22m in place and align perfectly with the connecting pieces. Now drill pilot holes, counter sink, glue and fasten with screws 3.0mm x 25mm. Your lantern frame is now complete.

Step 5:

Fastening the base. Use Laminated Pine 220mm x 220mm x 22mm (x1).

Now fasten the completed lantern frame to the lantern base 220mm x 220mm x 22mm (x1). Place the frame on top of the base. Make sure that the frame is centred allowing equal spaces on all 4 sides before marking the correct position with a pencil. Now apply wood glue to the frame, drill pilot holes, counter sink and fasten in place with screws.

Step 6:

Finishing.

Building of your Lantern is now complete. Apply wood filler to the screw tops and any uneven joints and allow to dry for a few hours. Now sand these areas and the rest of the wood with 100 grit sand paper for a smooth finish. You can now apply a coating of your choice. We decided to use an aerosol spray paint in a copper finish.
